Last week on June 15, 2014 we lost one of the greatest radio jockeys and the voices to ever hit our airways, amazingly on Father’s day. Casey Kasem died at the age of 81. But what did happen within the family setting may have you going “Zoinks!”
Leaving behind his second wife of 33 years, Jean and his children Kerri, Julie, and Mike Kasem from his first marriage and Liberty his forth child with Jean.
Casey’s health started to deteriorate in 2007 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He signed a document giving his older children by his first marriage the authority to make decisions concerning his medical care if he was no longer able to himself. The document declared that he did not want to be kept alive if he had ‘no reasonable hope of normal functioning.’ However, Jean Kasem had blocked Julie Kasem and her husband, Dr. Jamil Aboulhosn, a cardiologist at UCLA Medical Center. So they in turn filed a conservatorship petition in Superior Court. Jean’s Los Angeles attorney, Steve Haney, who called it the functional equivalent of a death sentence, condemned the court’s decision. Haney claimed that Kerri’s real concern over her father is that she wants to profit from her father’s death. “Kerri was cut off in 2007 after she accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans,’ he said. “Casey and Jean’s fear is that any money going to the Scientologist kids would end up in the Church. Instead he gave Kerri and her two siblings and Liberty a $2 million insurance policy.
Kerri Kasem, the Dj’s oldest daughter (41) and Mouner Kasem, his brother (78) led a protest march with many friends right outside Casey Kasem’s estate on October 1, 2013. They were holding signs that read things like, “Why won’t you let me see my dad?”
At a hearing Oct. 15, Jean Kasem struck back. Although she never appeared in court, her attorney, Marshall B. Grossman, declared that a document signed by Casey Kasem in 2011 had given his wife power of attorney, superseding the 2007 conservatorship. For Jean Kasem, he said, the protest and legal action had been “a sham.” Julie and Mike had reached a confidential agreement granting them visitation. Kerri, however had refused to sign this new agreement. After the confidential hearing, Mike Kasem was said to report that his father was now in the hospital. Mike Kasem who lives in Singapore where he is thriving as a radio DJ, reluctantly signed the agreement of the visitation. He is quoted to say, “The deal that Julie and I signed, I don’t think it would honor our father’s wishes, but there comes a point when you have to decide how far you want to go. We felt things weren’t going to get better.”
Kerri Kasem, however was livid and remained determined to fight. Before, during and even after Casey Kasem died on June 15, 2014, his family continued to go at it. Now Jean is accusing his kids of using their dead father for his money. Jean said Casey’s daughter, Kerri called the funeral home to see how quickly she could get the death certificate. “Their impatience for Casey to die was obvious when they killed him and now their impatience to collect on the $2 million life insurance is even more telling,” Jean said.
But to throw more fuel on the fire, Kerri’s lawyer and private investigator, Logan Clarke are accusing Jean of cheating on her dying father for two years! Jean even moved her younger lover into the oceanfront condo she own in Malibu. Mrs. Kasem has been lying to Casey, who has dementia and Parkinson’s disease, that they are divorced! Logan Clarke was hired to gather facts and prove that Jean Kasem committed a crime. If it had not been for Jean’s cruelty and abuse to Casey, he would have been alive today and lived for a couple of years more.
When Jean Kasem wanted to move him from the hospital in Santa Monica, the doctor told her that it could kill him if she removed his feeding tube. But she did it anyway. Mrs. Kasem put Casey in an SUV with a Mexican caretaker, no doctor or nurse. The she got into another SUV with her daughter Liberty. The two SUV’s took off out of California to Washington.
Jean rebutted in her defense in court, “I have spared no expense to ensure that Casey receives state-of-the-art medical and 24 hour a day care.”
However the Private Investigator Logan that Kerri Kasem hired noted that the reality is nothing close to that. Jean would abandon him for 9, 10, 11, days at a time. I have notes from doctors saying, “Mr. Kasem’s wife says she’s coming to visit him but she never shows up.” One hospital he was in discharged him and Jean didn’t come to pick him up for seven days. He had to stay in the hospital for that extra week until she showed up!
Jean is retaliating with her side of the story as well. She knows the Kerri, Julie and Mike never came around after being cut off in 2007. However they show up in 2013 when they heard about their father dying. It was a final attempt for them to hook into his $80 million estate. Kerri and her Scientologist friends picketed in front of Jean’s house, Jean received death threats, and someone even went through her garbage. As far as Jean been lying to him about being divorced, what possible motive could Mrs. Kasem have for such cruelty?
Kerri of course denied these claims. She always had a great trust and understanding with her father. Kerri claims she had never gone a week without either seeing or talking to her father until Jean blocked her and her siblings.
The fighting will continue on until the money is resolved. Then there will be no reason to speak.
